happy birthday heather!

Heather Jo was born today… a few years ago, in Bellflower, California. She is the third of seven children and a very fun big sis. I still remember sitting in the back of the car and squealing from pure excitement after it was announced by our parents that we would be going to watch the Disneyland fireworks*! This may be one of the reasons as to why Heather is a big Disney fan today, and being raised in Anaheim, only three miles from the Happiest Place on Earth, it’s really no surprise. I still remember dancing with her and our brother Joe at Videopolis (wow, that name just sounds TOTALLY 80s).

As a younger sister, I was always envious of her great curly hair, smooth skin, and trendy clothes. We shared a room for a long time and she loved scaring me about the “deep end” of the bed, which was just a big crack between our bed and the wall. She is very wise and has great inner strength. I would say she’s one of the “steel magnolias” in my life, even though we aren’t from the South. She has a great family. Her fifteen year old son, Payne, is Autistic and our whole famiy has been blessed to have him in our lives. He is followed by Mallea (13), Josie (8) and Campbell (5). Heather is married to Graigg, who dotes on her and buys her Tiffany jewelry. They live in Missouri, which is WAY too far, in my opinion!

I am so glad that she’s my sistah. I love you Headie!! HAPPY B-DAY!! To read more about her, check out Heather’s blog.

*This will probably age me (as if the Videopolis comment didn’t enough), but when we lived in Anaheim, we could see the fireworks from our backyard. Sometimes we would drive to the top of Wagner hill and watch them with anyone else who had stopped. But the best was when my parents were really feeling nice (this is where the squeals came in) and we would drive over to Disneyland and park in the back lot, which is now where ToonTown in located. This was by far the best seat in the house, except for probably the best seat in the house INSIDE the park.

picnic at the park

We had a little picnic at Rock Canyon Park the other day. We had good food, great weather and just enough wind to fly our $3 kite. Gwen LOVED watching the kite, and Dave couldn’t resist rolling down the big hill, as usual. This time Nezzie gave it a try as well…

easter sunday, etc.

At about 7:15 am Dave and I heard Nezzie yelling, “Mommy, Daddy!! Mommy, Daddy!! Look what I found!!” She was so excited and I said to Dave, “Aww, she must have found the jelly beans in her shoes.” *This is a Kewish tradition that may or may not be explained in a later post.* So Dave got up and went to her room, where she was NOT found. No, no. Our little one had VERY quietly gone downstairs and found her easter basket all by herself. By the time we got to the top of the stairs to join her, she was yelling, “Mommy, Daddy! I found toys and peeps!!!” I could not get mad at her, she was so excited. But as a result of rushing downstairs to catch some sort of a glimpse of her discovery, we have no Easter morning pictures.

However, here are a few pictures of the girls in their Easter outfits. I made the skirts and Gwen’s headband, my Mom made Nezzie’s, and I bought the shirts at Target. I’m pretty proud of myself, as long as I don’t look closely at Gwen’s waistband.

We had nummy Easter dinner with Mom & Dad Kewish, and Uncle Jon & Aunt Ashley, followed by a rousing game of Facts in Five. And of course we ended the evening on a high note watching The Evil Easter Bunny. Tears freely flowed from my eyes as I laughed, hard. And while I remembered the best Easter weekend ever, when that cinematic masterpiece was born, I was reflecting and just feeling so lucky to be a part of the best family ever (no offense to you non-Kewish readers). Even with all of our crazy traditions and imperfections, I just love my parents and siblings more than I can express. I have been so blessed to have them in my life because they have taught me so much and love me unconditionally. They have added even more to this family by way of spouses (those crazy enough to marry into our family) and children and as a result my life has been enriched. So this Easter sunday I feel an immense gratitude for our Savior who died for us and made it possible to return and live with our Father in Heaven as eternal families. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

rex lee run

Saturday was the Rex Lee Run and Dave, Jon & my Dad all ran the 5K, and I walked/jogged it while pushing the double jogging stroller (thanks for the loan Julie!). Jon ran it in 25 minutes flat, Dave in 26:34, and Dad in 30:13. Dad even came in second place in his age group––pretty good for an old guy, but then we wouldn’t expect any less from a marathon runner! I did it in 45:16 and pushed myself too hard. I became violently ill for the rest of the day. I had the world’s worst headache, was puking and was severly dehydrated as well. In my delirium I heard the words heat stroke and heat exhaustion being used. Today my shoulder is sore and I can only conclude that while it was a really good workout, in the future I will not push a double jogger in a race unless I have been training with one.

Now Dave is on this running high and is looking for more races to run. I think he should try the half marathon in August that goes up Provo Canyon because that just seems cool, but he thinks he should try a 10K before he makes the jump from 5K to half marathon. I am very proud of him though (gotta give the spouse a shout out here) because he’s only been running since January, in the gym on the treadmill. I think that he made pretty good time for a new runner, especially on those hills of BYU that were part of the race. Killer.

kewish blog posts, together at last

Kewish Blog Mash Up

I put together a test page tonight that pulls in and posts chronologically all of the latest blog entries from all of the Kewish family blogs (using those handy RSS/XML feeds that are on all of our blogs thanks to Blogger, WordPress, and .mac). It’s very bares-bones at this point, and I’ll probably move it to a different location at some point, but if anyone is interested, you can check it out here: Kewish Blog Mash Up.
